What’s in a Cover… Nothing According to Activision

June 22nd, 2009

Today Activision revealed the official Guitar Hero 5 box art. And after months of waiting and wondering, we get… This? That’s going to do a terrific job of differentiating it from the plethora of other Guitar Heroes coming out this holiday season.

I’m also still a little iffy on their decision to go back to numbering the iterations just one year after they ditched them. Especially since it seemed that they ditched the numbering to signify the addition of the extra instruments. Going back to numbering, along with this boring cover, plus the addition of a game called Band Hero, I get the feeling that Activision may be inadvertently brewing confusion. I could easily see how some people might think that Guitar Hero 5 is going back to the guitar only gameplay. And this cover will do nothing to clear that up.

It seems that Activision’s learned that they can slap the words Guitar Hero on just about anything now and sell a few million copies. Plus save a few bucks on graphic designers (Seriously, pretty sure an intern did that image). Granted, none of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band covers have been awe inspiring, but at least they attempted to capture the high energy of rocking out.

Next year just expect a full black cover.
